José Raúl Ruiz Sarmiento was visiting the Active Vision Laboratory at the University of Oxford, UK, from April to July 2019.

During his stay, Raúl collaborated in the research of novel ways of contextual information exploitation by Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). He also had time to enjoy the (un)stable climate (you can experience the four seasons in just a few hours), visit the countless historical buildings and places in the city, endless green parks and, why not, try some tasty beers. We are in our way to show the fruits of this collaboration soon!

Riheb Bouaziz, a second-year student from the Télécom Physique Strasbourg, University of Strasbourg (France) spent the last 3 months (June - August) in our laboratory in order to gain experience and face some real problems of mobile robotics. During her stay, she was committed to a project related to the detection and localization of objects with RFID technology and a mobile robot within indoor environments.

She has been an excellent student, committed to the project and to the group, and we hope that the valuable experience she has gained with us during this period would be of help for finishing her studies as well as in her professional future. We wish you the very best in your future endeavors, and welcome back whenever you want to visit us!

The international conference on information processing and management of uncertainty in knowledge-based system (IPMU) is a conference which always gathers some of the most important researchers in fuzzy-related areas to discuss the current state-of-the-art and possible future developments. It has been organized every two years since 1986, aimed at bringing together scientists working on methods for the management of uncertainty and aggregation for the exchange of ideas between theoreticians and practitioners in these and related areas. The last edition was held in Cádiz (Spain), and MAPIR contributed with the paper entitled Towards a Semantic Gas Source Localization under Uncertainty.

As the MoveCare project advances, new developments and intervention scenarios are incorporated by the different partners. Last 16th and 17th May 2018 the consortium met in Milan to integrate the lattest advances and discuss the roadmap for the following months. The MAPIR group, in charge of WP4 related to the robot navigation and represented by Javier Monroy, collaborated during two intense days in the integration of the robot-related components (software and hardware) and in the test of different scenarios where the robot plays a critial role.

The first edition of the IBIMA-Divulga awards, bringing together the best papers published during 2017 within the Institute of Biomedical Research in Malaga, was celebrated last May 2018 in Málaga. This act was inaugurated by the Deputy Councilor of Health, together with the Vice-Rector for research and transfer of the University of Málaga, and the scientific director of IBIMA.

MAPIR was nominee with two papers which where presented by Javier Monroy and J. Raúl Ruiz Sarmiento. After deliveration of the jury, Javier Monroy won the third accessit with the paper Gas classification in motion: An experimental analysis", published in the journal Sensors and Actuators B: Chemical.

The first integration meeting of the MoveCare project was held in Milan during January 2018. During two intense days the different partners of the project combined their individually tested software and hardware components towards the achievement of the project goals. The MAPIR group, in charge of WP4 related to the robot navigation, was represented in this ocasion by Javier Monroy.

Two members of the MAPIR group, Javier Gonzalez and Javier Monroy, assisted the 1st International Conference on Applications of Intelligent Systems (APPIS) held on 8-12 January 2018 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain. This conference aims at bringing together scientists who develop or apply intelligent systems, machine learning, artificial intelligence, pattern recognition, and related methods. The MAPIR group contributted with four short papers:

The European Conference on Mobile Robotics (ECMR) is an internationally open biennial European forum, allowing researchers to learn about and discuss the latest accomplishments and innovations in mobile robotics and mobile human-robot systems. ECMR 2017 was the 8th edition of the conference, and was held in Paris, France. ECMR provided keynote sessions, original presentations about research in progress and was organized in single track mode to favor discussions.

For this edition of the ECMR, MAPIR was represented by Andres Gongora and Manuel Lopez-Antequera, who presented the two following works:


One of the works published along this year by the MAPIR group is bringing an important attention from the social media. The work, GADEN: A 3D Gas Dispersion Simulator for Mobile Robot Olfaction in Realistic Environments presents a simulation framework fusing mobile robotics and gas dispersion theory to ease the development of new algorithms and methods in this field.

In this ocassion was the SER radio station who interviewed one of the authors, and then published the new in twitter (in spanish).

The International Symposium on Olfaction and Electronic Nose (ISOEN) is the world’s premiere technical conference in artificial chemoreception (olfaction and taste). ISOEN 2017 provides a forum for scientists, engineers and practitioners to share their latest findings, innovations and products in the area of artificial chemoreception. In the 2017 conference held in Montreal(Canada), the MAPIR group was represented by Javier Monroy who presented two works:

The second meeting of the MoveCare project has been held in the Parador Nacional of Jarandilla de la Vega (Extremadura, Spain) in the beginning of April, hosted by the Consejería de Sanidad y Políticas Sociales - Junta de Extremadura. During an intense day of work, the partners presented the on-going work that is being carried out in the different workpackages, providing this way, an updated view of the project evolution, and could share questions and knowledge to overcome the issues so far.

The MoveCare project has started! Javier Gonzalez, Cipriano Galindo and Francisco-Angel Moreno attended the project Kick-off Meeting in Milan in mid-January. Two intense days of presentations, talks and brainstorming to start the ambitious tasks included in MoveCare. The partners found a great opportunity to gather in the University of Milan and exchange ideas, concerns and collaboration plans for the next months. Thanks to Alberto Borghese for his hospitality.

Jose Raul Ruiz Sarmiento defended his doctoral dissertation entitled "Probabilistic Techniques in Semantic Mapping for Mobile Robotics" on November 25th, 2016. The hard work and perseverance shown during his PhD, rewarded him with the Cum Laude calification. Congratulations!

To strengthen the colaborations between the different reserch groups and medical facilities that compose the Institute of Biomedical Research in Malaga (IBIMA), the last 23th November 2016 the institute held a co-working day. Our group participated in such event with a short presentation of our work and objectives, as well as stablishing interesting relationships for biomedical related projects.

To share the knowledge and technical advances of our lab, the MAPIR group (represented on this occasion by Javier G. Monroy) attended the SMART RURAL "FIMART" innovation fair. In its third edition, this innovation fair brought together companies and research facilities with the aim to promote technology transfer and innovation in rural areas.

Farewell dinner

Once again, the MAPIR group has contributed to the summer school held at the University of Malaga during July 2016 (official page in Spanish). The courses were intended to teach the basics of robotics to the most qualified high school students from all around Spain. After an intense week of lectures, practices, and two final projects in which all the students had to design and implement reactive behaviors in C-style programming language in the Lego Mindstrorms robots, the students visited our laboratory to see real mobile robots, how they work, and what sensors, actuators, and algorithms do they use to solve some real tasks.

We enjoyed the visit and hope that, in a few years, some of these enthusiastic students join the lab to help us bringing robots to a new level.

Javier G. Monroy and Francisco Moreno Dueñas represented the MAPIR research group at the Technology Transfer TTAndalucía workshop in the field of Smart Cities.
The main objective of this workshop is to create a forum between University and enterprises intended for professionals, companies, research groups and centers in this sector. It holds bilateral meetings in order to establish technology transfer agreements related to the latest innovations in the sector, as well as to promove the colaboration by means of research projects.
We look forward to sucessfull collaborations!
